Everybody Eats: Community-based Food System

Community-based food systems serve as engines of resistance and resilience, fostering self-determination, sovereignty, connection, and liberation. They exemplify how and why these systems succeed: by being agile and responsive to community needs, nurturing trust, and paving the way for self-empowerment and collective strength. They honor traditional wisdom in caring for both the earth and the community.

Food goes beyond nutrition and economics—it encompasses culture, history, and human connection. It is essential to our health, well-being, and to the cultivation of community power and prosperity. Community-based food systems are not just what we need in times of crisis; they are key to shaping a more just and sustainable future for everyone.

Our History

Everybody Eats is an initiative started by Kirk Jackson, a Third Ward resident and community advocate. His vision was a community where "no one went to bed hungry". The EEDC is honored to carry his work forward.

Everybody Eats strives to create a more connected

Third Ward through communication, circulation and collaboration amongst food pantries, food providers and community gardens. Together we are developing a sustainable community-based food systems to ensure a healthy and equitable Third Ward.

Our Goals

  • More Food, Less Waste: Reduce food waste by circulating surplus between community food providers and senior centers
  • Increased Collaboration: Coordination and Communication between food providers within the community.
  • Get Food to the People: Address barriers to food access for residents in need.
